I don’t know about you, but growing up I always planned my Halloween costume months in advance. When I was old enough, I would make my costumes out of things I found around the house. Now that I’m older and have a daughter I wanted to make her a costume this year. I was looking at Pinterest and found a great Ghost tutu costume on Esty. The cost to buy the costume was $62.95. What?!? I don’t have that kind of money. So, of course I had to make my own! And mine cost LESS THAN $15!!!
Materials used to make the NO SEW Tutu:
- Tape measure
- Ribbon
- Tulle
- Scissors
- Cardboard
Material used to make ghost shirt:
- Plain white shirt
- Iron on ghost face
- Bows (optional)
First I started out my making the tutu. I found a great step by step tutorial by Ella Rose Portrait Arts which you can find here.
Step 1: Measure the waist where you want the tutu to sit. My daughter’s waist was 20 inches.
Step 2: After you have measured the waist, you want to measure out your ribbon. I measured 20 inches for the waist, then an additional 40 inches for the bow (20 inches for each side). So, 20 + 40 = 60 inches total.
Step 3: Next, measure a piece of cardboard the length you want the tutu. I made an 8 inch tutu, so I measured 8 inches on the cardboard.
Step 4: Grab your tulle and start wrapping it around the cardboard, making sure not to pull too tight. I used a matte white and black tulle from Hobby Lobby. You want 60 stripes of each color making it a total of 120 stripes. The rolls I used were 25 yards, so I used the entire roll of each tulle.
Step 5: Cut one end of the tulle down the center. *DO NOT cut both ends!
Step 6: After measuring out both colors of tulle, lay them out flat. They will measure 16 inches long.
Step 7: Grab your ribbon and measure and mark with a pencil at 20 inches. Then take one piece of tulle and make a loop with your finger. Make sure the ends of the tulle match up together.
Step 8: Next, place the loop under the ribbon where you marked 20 inches.
Step 9: Hold the ribbon and pull both ends of the tulle through the loop. Make sure you pull tight.
Step 10: Add two more of the same color. I started with black. Then, add three of the white tulle pieces, alternating three of each color until you have reached the size for the waist. In this case it was 20 inches. *If you want a fluffy tutu pull the pieces close together.
Step 11: After you are done tying the tulle pieces to the ribbon, use a lighter to lightly burn both ends of the ribbon. This will prevent the ribbon from fraying. *This only works with a ribbon made of a synthetic fiber. A cotton or natural fiber ribbon will burn instead of melting.
*Making the tutu was very easy. It took me a total of one hour to make it.
Now on to make the ghost face shirt!
Step 1: Start with a plain white shirt. I bought a long sleeved tshirt from Wal Mart for $3.88.
Step 2: You will need a iron on face. I ordered one from Who’s Sew Cute Designs off of Esty for $3. The packet contained two eyes and a mouth along with instructions on how to use the iron on.
Step 3: Peel off paper backing and place the applique, adhesive side down on top of the shirt.
Step 4: Preheat iron to medium heat with no steam. Press and hold iron for 8 seconds on each section of the applique until the entire piece is bonded.
*To add a little bit more cuteness I sewed two bows to the shirt. I found these cute black and white polka dot bows by The Flying Trapeze at Hobby Lobby.
The total start and finish time was 2 hours and the total cost was $13.84!
Here’s the cost breakdown:
- White tulle $1.99 using 50% off at Hobby Lobby
- Black tulle $1.99 using 50 % off at Hobby Lobby
- Ribbon $1.99 using 50% off at Hobby Lobby
- White Garanimals shirt $3.88 from Wal Mart
- Iron on $3 from Esty
- Bows $0.99 from Hobby Lobby
And just one more because it’s too cute!

This costume is ADORABLE, Katie (as is your little model)! After two boys, I’m having fun dressing up my daughter in tutus every chance I get! She’s going to be Princess Leia this Halloween to match the theme of her big brothers, but I’m going to pin this idea for next year when she’s 2. Thanks so much for sharing…your step-by-step makes it seem totally doable. 🙂

That is by far the CUTEST ghost costume I’ve ever seen, but over $60 for a costume – no way! I’ll barely spend that kind of money on shoes I plan to WEAR OUT! I love that you were able to make it for so much less. It amazes me at how people are willing to shell out money over time! Hoping your little cutie rakes it in this Halloween 🙂
I’d love if you’d consider linking up with me: http://www.dreamalittlebigger.com/post/link-party-9.html
