Have you started decorating for fall? Every year I drag out my tired orange foam pumpkin that is about 9 years old. The poor pumpkin is beat up and scratched. It has seen better days. This year I decided to give it a makeover. I just love how this Chalky Paint Pumpkin Centerpiece turned out! It definitely looks a hundred times better than before.
Here is my sad orange artificial foam pumpkin. Lots of nicks and scrapes. Time for a makeover.
MATERIALS:
- X-acto knife
- White chalky paint
- Foam paint brush
- Artificial flowers
I started by making an opening on the top of the pumpkin around the stem using a sharp X-acto knife. Make sure you are very careful using this kind of tool. It’s extremely sharp and you don’t want to cut yourself (I know from experience).
I painted the pumpkin using a foam brush and white chalky paint I had left over from my DIY Glass Bottles. I only applied one coat of the chalky paint because I still wanted some of the orange peeking through. The chalky paint gives the pumpkin a matte rustic look.
I purchased some fall colored artificial flowers for half off at my local craft store. Make sure you try and catch them on sale because they can be a bit pricey. I wanted to use fake flowers so they can last from year to year.
I arranged the flowers in the opening of the pumpkin. I’m not a flower expert, I just put little flowers and leaves next to bigger ones. Tall flowers in the back and short flowers in the front. I think it turned out pretty good.
Now I have this beautiful fall centerpiece I can display this entire season and for years to come. What a difference a little paint makes! It can totally transform the look and feel of any project and breathe new life into something that was once done in.
