Today I am excited to share a fun paint project that is different from a traditional fall wreath.
How to make a DIY Stenciled Planter Wreath
Supplies:
- DecoArt Matte Metallics 2oz – Pewter
- Americana Decor Texture 8oz – Moss Blue
- Americana Decor Stencils 8″x 8″ – Mediterranean Tile
- Raw Wood for box
- Paint Brush
- Palette Knife
- Faux Flowers
Instructions:
I started by making the 8 inch by 8 inch by 4 inch wood planter. I used boards that were 3/4″ thick and two cut pieces that are 8″ wide by 8″ tall. Also, I cut two pieces 3/4″ thick, 8″ tall and 2 1/2″ wide. For the bottom I cut a piece 3/4″ thick, 6 1/2″ long and 2 1/2″ wide. I used wood glue, small nails, and clamps to assemble and secure the box. I filled the nail holes with wood filler and sanded smooth.
Once the wood planter was complete, I painted two thin coats of DecoArt Matte Metallics in the color Pewter. Allow each coat of paint to dry before apply additional coats. Raw wood really soaks up paint and I used a light color so two coats were needed for full coverage.
I am using the Americana Decor Stencils 8″x 8″ Mediterranean Tile and Texture paint to create a dimensional element to the planter wreath. Start by scooping out the texture paint onto a disposable plate using a spatula tool or palette knife. Using the flat side of the spatula, slowly swipe the texture paint over the stencil in one straight motion. I recommend not going over the stencil in the opposite direction because the paste is likely to go underneath the stencil causing smears.
Let the paint dry completely before you remove the stencil. You can see the texture paint is raised creating a three dimensional image.
One tip I have when creating flower arrangements is to use several different shapes and colors of faux flowers. This creates dimension and texture. I really love the color contrast between the flowers and the planter itself.
This DIY Stenciled Planter Wreath can easily be created with a few simple woodworking skills and DecoArt paints.
