It’s officially summer break which means lots of time spent outdoors. I wanted to come up with a craft project that my daughter could help me make and also be practical. We came up with these pretty watercolor DIY Terracotta Citronella Candles because they are super easy to make. We made two candles; one that looks like the desert sky and the second that looks like lavender fields. We love how they turned out!
Supplies:
- Small terracotta pots
- DecoArt Patio Paint Outdoor in the colors: cloud white, carnation pink, vintage rose, honeydew, deep buttercup, and petunia purple
- Paint Brush
- Soy wax flakes
- Citronella essential oil
- Candle wicks
- hot glue gun
Instructions:
We started by painting a couple of small terracotta pots. This step can be done by any age child. Just pick your favorite patio paint and start painting. We mixed each color with white to create a watercolor/ombre effect. The colors are so vibrant and pretty. We love how the dessert sky and lavender fields turned out.
Patio Paint Outdoor is water-based and non-toxic for easy clean-up. It provides excellent adhesion to exterior surfaces such as concrete, terracotta, masonry, and wood.
To make the candle you may want to make it while your child or children watch. The wax gets hots and you don’t want any accidents. If you think they are old enough to make a candle, go for it but be careful!
Apply hot glue to the metal tab on the candle wick. Place the tab in the bottom center of the terracotta pot. I used a new clamping method with two popsicle sticks and a clothespin. This is the best way I have found to hold the wick in place. Set aside. *I plugged the hole in the bottom of the pots with hot glue.
Place 3 cups of natural soy wax flakes into a heat resistant bowl. Using a microwave in 30 second increments, melt the wax until completely dissolved into a liquid. I added 30 drops of citronella essential oil. I also added 15 drops of lime essential oil to mellow out the citronella scent.
Pour the scented liquid candle wax into the prepared pots. Set aside and let harden. The candle wax will change to a white color once it is completely set and hardened. Trim the wick by cutting it with a pair of scissors.
These DIY Terracotta Citronella Candles would be perfect for outdoor parties, bbqs, and just hanging out. They would make a great gift!
