My daughter is always asking to play with my camera whenever I have it out to take pictures for my blog. As much as I would love for her to play with my expensive camera (not), I thought I would make her her own DIY Wooden Toy Camera. Now she has a pretend camera to play with while I use my camera. She just loves it! It’s cuter than mine anyway.
MATERIALS:
- 2 1/2″ x 4″ piece of scrap wooden, sanded
- 2″ flat wooden circle
- 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ wooden wheel
- 1/2″ dowel rod
- Chalky paint
- Scrapbook paper
- Mod Podge
- Foam brushes
- Wood glue
*This toy camera is recommend for ages 3 and up.
I had my husband cut the wood scrap piece for me. After sanding the wood scrap, I painted all the wooden pieces using a chalky paint. I just am obsessed with chalky paint now. It’s easy to use and I love the chalky matte finish. Of course you can use whatever kind of paint you like and if you are concerned about paint, you can always use a non-toxic paint which is what I did.
I left one side of the scrap wood unpainted because I wanted to apply a piece of scrapbook paper to the front. I found this really cute and colorful camera scrapbook paper in my stash and just had to use it. I cut the piece of paper 2 1/2″ x 4″ which is the same measurement as the scrap wood. I applied a thin layer of Mod Podge to the wood the gently laid the paper on top. After letting it dry, I applied another thin coat of Mod Podge on top of the paper and let that dry.
After the Mod Podge dried, I applied wood glue to the 2″ flat wooden circle and placed it in the center of the camera body. I placed a heavy object on top of it to let dry. Then I used the same process for the wooden wheel. Finally, I glued the small dowel rod on top of the camera and let it dry.
How stinking cute is that?! I LOVE how this toy camera turned out.
You can make this camera for kids birthdays and/or Christmas is coming up soon. I think this camera is so much more special then the ones at the store.

This is so cute, Katie! I think I have to tackle this project myself. Being a photographer, my kids literally hate my camera as they in front of it all the time. Sometimes the only way to photograph them if I let them take a pic of mommy as well:-) which is not a very fun game with my pricey camera.Pinning this for later!!Have a great week!
