I am so excited to see cane furniture make a come back. If you haven’t noticed, it is almost everywhere you look. One of my favorite things to do is create my own DIY versions of products I see online or in the store (Hello, Studio McGee).
With spring approaching I thought I fun project to share is how to make an affordable and easy caned vase for flowers.
This caned vase project can easily be created with just a few materials and supplies. Sounds good, right?!
A couple of years ago I made a storage box using caned material for my friend Kristi’s blog, Barn Owl Primitives. I had left over supplies and thought I would make a vase for flowers.
Flowers are must in my home whether they are fresh or dried florals. They just lift my mood and add so much charm to a room.
Easy DIY on How to Create a Vase Using Cane
Supplies (affiliate links included):
- Glass Vase
- Flat oval reed in 1/4″ width
- Caning Sheet or webbing of your choice
- Scissors
- Hot Glue Gun
How to make a easy caned vase for flowers:
Step 1: Start by measuring how much cane material you need to wrap around your glass vase. I am using a 6 ” x 4″ cylindrical glass vase I recently purchased at Target. It is the Treshold brand.
After the width of the caning is cut, trim the piece to the height of your vase.
Step 2: Lay the caned material flat and cut where you have measured. The material is rolled in a sheet so it does want to curl up on you. That makes it tricky to cut but easier to wrap around the vase.
Use a hot glue gun to attach the caned material at the seam. Try not to use too much glue or it will seep out and become visible.
Quick note – I did glue the cane to the vase so it’s attached and does not move around.
Step 4: Trim two pieces of flat reed to wrap around the top and bottom of your vase.
Use hot glue to attach the flat reed across the top and bottom of the vase. You want the reed to fit snugly together start to end.
That’s it! So simple and stylish, right?! I love the caned look because it can go with any home decor style… farmhouse, rustic, boho, traditional, you name it.
Also, these amazing glasses below that I bought at World Market but can’t find on their website. But I did find similar ones on Pottery Barn here.

I have always thought that spring flowers make the perfect centerpiece on a kitchen counter and dining or coffee table. However, you can always use faux flowers.
