Hello there! Today I am sharing a Father’s Day gift idea that I made for my husband. This Metallic and Wood Pencil Holder would make a fun addition to any modern work or craft space. The raw wood and bright metallic paints look so sophisticated and hip.
The inspiration for the Metallic and Wood Pencil Holder came from this Bourbon Barrel Stylus Writing Pen that I bought my husband. He recently got promoted to supervisor at the coal mine he works at. He has paperwork that he needs to do and I thought this ridiculously awesome pen would be a great gift to celebrate this promotion. Then I thought I would make him a handmade holder to house the pen in.
Supplies: (affiliate links)
- Americana Decor Metallics 80z – Pewter
- Americana Decor Metallics 80z – Antique Bronze
- Wooden House Block – I bought mine at Michaels
- Painter Tape
- Paint Brushes
- Dremel
- Handsaw
Instructions:
It’s not everyday that I bust out power tools, but sometimes it’s a nice challenge. It was actually quite simple to use a dremel to cut the top of the wooden house block. Then I used a handsaw to smooth out the edges. The wood did burn slightly from the dremel, but that’s okay. I am going to paint it!
Now comes the fun part…painting! I am using DecoArt’s NEW Americana Decor Metallics in Pewter and Antique Bronze. The Pewter is a beautiful blue/gray with flecks of shimmer. Normally, I am not a huge fan of bronze but this shade by DecoArt is very bright and pretty. Make sure to shake metallic paint well before using.
Next, I taped off the wooden house block using a piece of blue painters tape. I wanted to leave some of the raw wood showing, so I taped a very small diagonal line around the center.
I painted two coats with the Pewter Metallics the top and the inside of the block. Lightly sand in between each coat for best metallic sheen.
I painted the bottom of the block using Antique Bronze. Again I applied two coats of paint using a foam paint brush, lightly sanding in between the coats.
My husband and I both like clean lines and I love the look of raw wood with paint. The bright metallic paint really makes this pencil holder pop.
I hope my Metallic and Wood Pencil Holder gave you some inspiration for Father’s Day or if you are looking for modern contemporary office supplies. Thanks for stopping by!
