Mini Toolbox for Father’s Day – a fun gift idea for any dad on his special day. Create a custom mini toolbox using DecoArt Decou-Page Paper.
Hello there! I can’t believe we are already talking about Father’s Day. It will be here before we know it. Today I am sharing a Mini Toolbox for Father’s Day. This is a fun way to customize an old tin you might already have on hand or you can buy a new one at any store. All you need is just a little paint and some fun decou-page papers and you have a mini toolbox gift. This is great for any dad or man because they can never have too many tools.
Here are the supplies I used to make the Mini Toolbox:
- Small metal tin (I bought mine at an antique store for 25 cents, but you can buy one anywhere)
- DecoArt Decou-Page Paper in Black Tribal
- Americana Acrylic Paint in Lamp (Ebony) Black
- Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint in Romance
- Americana Decou-Page in Matte finish
- Foam brushes
- Cabinet pull
- Tools for toolbox
The inspiration for the mini toolbox came from this metal Christmas tin. I purchased this tin at a local antique store for 25 cents. You can find metal tins like this one at any store. They are very common.
Since the tin had red in it already, I knew I wanted to use that color. First, I removed the bow that was on the lid. I painted the lid with American Decor Chalky Finish paint in Romance. I used several coats to cover the snowflakes. For a contrasting color, I choose Americana Acrylic Paint in Lamp (Ebony) Black and I applied two coats using a foam brush. I just love how easy these DecoArt Americana Paints are to use and the clean up is quick. Let the paint dry before moving on to the next step. DecoArt paints dry quickly.
I measured the outside of the tin just below where the lid will sit and traced out two pieces of Decou-Page Paper in tribal black. Then, I gently cut out the marking on the paper. Americana Decou-Page Paper is significantly thinner than most decoupage papers, which means it delivers an almost seamless finish. Its great for easily wrapping around corners and effortlessly eliminates creases and wrinkles.
I applied a medium layer of Decou-Page to the surface of the metal tin and a layer to the back of the paper. I smoothed the paper out, using a foam brush to remove any bubbles or creases. Allow 15-20 minutes dry time and then apply a coat of Decou-Page over the top of paper. For a smooth, final finish, I dampened the foam brush before applying the final coat. Allow the final coat to dry for 24 hours before use.
I also added the decou-page paper to the inside of the tin. That not so pretty gold color inside of the tin needed to be covered up. Just repeat the steps above.
Finally, I added a cabinet pull to the top of the lid to aid as a handle. I am loving the black and red color combination. It is sharp looking.
What do you think of my Mini Toolbox for Father’s Day? I just added some small hand tools that fit inside the toolbox. Dad will be all set for projects around the house.
