How To Create A Living Room That You and Your Guests Will Love
Do you have a vision of what you want your living room to look like, but have no idea where to start? This is the sixth and final week of the One Room Challenge and I have to tell you that at the start of week 1 I really didn’t have a clue where the design of my modern traditional living room was going to go. I mean, I kind of had some thoughts and jumped head first into a pool of furniture, paint, and pillows. The more you immerse yourself into styles and design, the more the room will start to evolve. The objective is to end up with a living room that you and your guests will love. Create a space that you will enjoy your space and want to come home to everyday and throw yourself on the couch and feel at peace.
Today is the big reveal of living room but let’s take a look at where we started.
It has been over a month since we moved into our new house and we have been busy transforming the upstairs living room into a modern traditional space. We started with a blank slate so I had to plan and design from the ground up.
The beginner’s guide to creating a beautiful living room:
- Week 1 – let’s get started
- Week 2 – the plans
- Week 3 – the power of paint and 3 different types of lighting
- Week 4 – wood and metal coffee table tutorial
- Week 5 – how to accessories like a pro
This was my first time participating in the one room challenge and the first time I did an entire room makeover…eek! I’ve learned so much with through this amazing experience and had such a fun time making a design plan and decorating a stylish place that my family and friends will appreciate.
Having a design plan and mood board was very helpful for me to stay on track and have a reference of where the design should go. I stayed pretty true to the plans but did make some adjustments. We made it through the challenge and now it’s time to share the end result!
Have A Spectacular Living Room You Can Be Proud Of
The entrance to the living room is a perfect welcoming, opening up to a white, sun-drenched, and spacious area. We turned this space into a modern traditional living room with hints of an eclectic vibe.
I seriously have no words…this living room turned out better than I even dreamed of. It is such a fun space with the awesome tufted charcoal gray couch, super modern and cute side chairs, a colorful eye-catching painting, luxe rug, and a hand-crafted coffee table (my husband made that).
Look at how bright this space is now. The white paint we used on the walls bounces the light from the large picture windows and really lighten things up. I added several plants to add life and color to a room without adding clutter. And guys…I’ve kept the fiddle fig alive!
I still can’t believe how awesome the coffee table turned out. I showed my husband a few inspirational pictures of some tables I liked and he made the best coffee table. The top is stained wood and the legs are metal that he welded together and painted. It’s the focal point in the middle of the room.
On the other side of the room is a gorgeous credenza with lots of fun and accessories and details.
The credenza is from Ikea and is a great storage space for our glasses, appetizer plates and bottles of liqueur. Yes, we do love to host.
I mixed brown, black and blue together and added dark wood pieces for warmth. A budget friendly idea for art prints is to use scrapbook paper to place in picture frames. This is a cozy sitting place to read a book.
Add personality to your living room with meaningful accessories
I love a good scented candle because it fills the space with a cozy fragrance and adds a visual appeal. The top candle lantern is from IKEA and the bottom candle in the pretty hammered gold bowl is Better Homes and Gardens at Walmart. The scent is soft cashmere amber and smells fabulous.
Books are another way to share your personality. Place your favorite reads on a credenza, coffee or end table to add texture, color, and dimension.
Add a cozy feel to a living space with a snuggly blanket and plush pillows. A throw blanket and pillow here and there adds texture, color, and yes, warmth. Having a blanket nearby makes your guests feel more at home.
I showed this picture to my uncle and he thought it was from a magazine. That is the ultimate complement. My husband and I did 100% everything in this room from the design and diys to the photos, hard work, sweat and tears. This picture does look amazing but behind the photo is many many hours of hard work. We rearranged the furniture until we were happy with the layout. I went through lots of decor pieces until everything looked it was placed there by a stylist. And, we didn’t kill each while working late nights.
I’d say our first One Room Challenge was a success. The transformation of this space is incredible and I am thrilled at how it turned out. I am beyond thankful and grateful for this opportunity. I loved the one room challenge that I am hoping to participate in the spring. Stay tuned!
